There’s a reason hot pot has been bringing people together for centuries. It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience. A simmering pot in the center of the table, plates of ingredients surrounding it, and everyone cooking their food exactly how they like it. Hot pot turns dinner into something slower, warmer, and more communal. You talk, you cook, you dip, you repeat. The biggest misconceptions? It's only for restaurants. Here's how you can host a hot pot night or do it for your family at home.
Hot Pot Shopping List:
Before you go to the store, you'll need a burner or hot plate (either electric or butane), a flat-bottomed pot, ladles, tongs, serving bowls (for the guests to retrieve their simmered ingredients), dipping dishes, chopsticks, and soup spoons.
Broth: You can pick up an easy broth at your favorite Asian grocer like
Mala (spicy and tingly) or go simple and grab chicken, beef, or veggie broth.
Proteins:
- Thinly sliced beef
- Pork belly
- Chicken
- Tofu
- Dumplings
Vegetables:
- Napa cabbage
- Mushrooms
- Bok choy
- Spinach
- Carrots
- Rice noodles
- Rice noodles
- Rice cakes
- 2 tbsp K-Mama Sauce
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
What to do next:
Start with your broth! Bring water and add your broth mix to a boil. Once hot, start by adding items.
We recommend carrots first because they sweeten the broth. Them more veggies for flavor. Meat, tofu or dumplings can go in next.
Hot tip: don't overload the pot with items right away. It's meant to be an experience, not a quick dinner.
Some people like to take their food out and dunk right into the sauce. Others will ladle some of the broth into a separate bowl and eat from there. Find what works for you and do not be afraid to make it your own. Enjoy!
